epistemic trademarking

๐Ÿ“– Definitions

Appropriation and branding of bodies of knowledge claims and practices as a trademark of one community. "A label or mark in scientific discourse (e.g. โ€˜Maxwellโ€™s equationsโ€™) becomes an epistemic trademark (e.g. โ€˜Maxwellian electromagnetic theoryโ€™) when it ends up concealing the complex historical lineages and blurring the epistemic contributions of various communities."
